Bystanders, including students and faculty members, became outraged when the police ordered them to disperse. Some students resisted the order and were shot by the police.

Violence broke out between Iraqi forces and Iranian revolutionaries following Iraqi invasion of Khorramshahr (now known as Khorramabad) in September 1980.
